A few shops, bottle stores and butchers line the main street in Williston, a small Karoo town between Calvinia and Carnarvon, but if you turn away towards the sandstone church you'll find an extraordinary oasis.
Welcome to the chaos of Williston Mall.
The 'mall' is a collection of small courtyard shops, a low-lit bar, notorious musical stage and guesthouse called Die Ark B&B. The whole thing has been constructed using old materials like rusted cars, faded signs, teapots, motorbikes, posters, books, hubcaps, suitcases and spades collected over the years by the owners and it's become a real Karoo treasure.
Be sure to order a little something: they're famed for their milkshakes and even have a 'Load Shedding Menu' to organise food when the electricity is down. Above you can see a little corner table of the cafe.
So if you ever find yourself with a little time on the R63, you know where to go.
